Gum Surgery
More than 75% of the population has some
form of gum disease. This is why it is
not surprising that dentists commonly recommend a procedure called periodontal
treatment to their patients. Gum condition such as deep pockets,
especially with bone loss, require immediate attention from the dentist.
Some of the common recommendations by dentists include scaling, deep cleaning
as well as gum surgery. Some of the signs and symptoms of gum disease may
include bad breath, bleeding gums, sore gums and teeth as well as loose
teeth. Lots of people are not aware of
these symptoms and gum disease can really eat the teeth away.
According to
American Dental Association only about 4% of patients needing gum surgery
actually follow through with treatment; lots of people are still terrified just
thinking about the gum surgery idea.
This is because traditional gum surgery is often uncomfortable and
sometimes even painful. But there are
new alternative methods such as laser treatment for periodontal diseases. With this treatment there’s less
re-occurrence of gum disease and there’s no intentional reduction of tissue
height the way it happens with regular gum surgery.
The laser treatment is painless although
anesthetizing the area may be done for patient comfort. There’s some
minimal post-procedure discomfort that doesn’t last long. The regeneration of bone following laser
periodontal therapy is quicker and patients are said to be consistently
impressed that there is considerably less pain, bleeding, post-procedural
discomfort and no need for incisions and a use of scalpel.
Laser treatment works by directing a small
amount of light energy through a tiny fiber which is gently placed between the
gum and tooth toward the affected area. The laser energy removes only the
diseased tissue on the inside of the pocket and aids in reducing the bacteria
associated with the gum disease. Next, tartar, which is associated with
inflamed and bleeding gums, is dislodged with the help of the laser and removed
using ultrasonic tools. Finally, the laser is used to help seal the gum
to the tooth in order to create a natural band aid. This procedure lets the body to heal the area naturally,
similar to the way the body heals a broken bone.
This treatment shouldn’t
cost more than a typical surgery since
patients do not require pre-treatment with deep scaling and root-planing
but there are other factors which may affect the cost, such as the severity of
the periodontal disease, and how many teeth need attending.
