Cosmetic Gum Surgery
We all want to have
attractive smiles, right? But that
attractive smile doesn’t always depend on lovely white and straight teeth. Even the nicest teeth need nice framing. Often an unattractive smile results when the
quality of gums is in question or and the actual gum between your teeth becomes
weak.
Often, if your dental
hygiene is lacking you begin to lose gum tissue. This is why cosmetic gum surgery is something to consider along
with other procedures of cosmetic dentistry such as composite resin bonding,
crowns, porcelain veneers or implants.
Cosmetic surgery of your
gums can also be used to correct a ’gummy smile’ where a lot of your gums are
exposed and your teeth appear smaller or in the wrong place.
The cosmetic gum surgery is
then used to lengthen your teeth from the neck of the tooth upwards. Following
this surgery our teeth then appear to be longer and much less gum can be seen
when you smile. Gum sculpting is often
the solution. To solve this, a dentist uses a diode laser to remove the excess
tissue of your "gummy" smile, which then exposes more of your tooth.
It lessens post-operative discomfort and a doctor is able to precisely contour
the gum tissue.
Another type of cosmetic gum
surgery is used to correct teeth that are too long. Sometimes, as we age, our gums may shrink and recede which makes
our teeth look too long. Though this is
often age-related, it can also occur due to a bad bite or genetics.
The costs involved in
cosmetic gum surgery differ extensively depending on how much of your mouth is
undergoing a procedure as well as what kind of corrective gum surgery is used
and if there are any other surgeries involved.
It is common for other cosmetic dentistry procedures, such as crowns or
veneers, to be recommended by your doctor as part of the overall strategy to
cosmetically correct your gums. Make sure all of this is discussed so that
you’re aware of any suggestions as well as extra costs.
If your gums look poorly due
to a gum disease your dentist may refer you to a periodontist who may recommend periodontal surgery.
Periodontal surgery is necessary when your periodontist determines that the
tissue around your teeth is unhealthy and cannot be repaired with non-surgical
treatment.
Some of these procedures
are: Pocket Reduction Procedures, Regenerative Procedures, Crown Lengthening,
Soft Tissue Grafts.
Also, if you’ve already lost
a tooth to periodontal disease, you may be interested in dental implants --the
permanent tooth replacement option.
