Receding Gum Surgery
Receding gums happen when
the gums and the bone in the mouth have moved away from the tooth.
In most cases receding gums
may be caused by gum disease, uneven way the teeth fit together when you bite
down or trauma due to an accident.
Other causes such as accumulation of plaque at the gum line and bad
dental hygiene can cause gums to recede since bacteria on the plaque release
toxic substances that destroy the gum tissue.
When they way teeth meet together is uneven, extra forces are placed on the teeth that may cause trauma to the
bone and gums.
Gum recession exposes the
roots of the teeth further causing the teeth to become sensitive to hot, cold,
sweet, and salty substances.
Additionally, excessive pressure resulting from grinding or clenching
teeth may results in gums recession.
Also receding gums may occur when teeth are crooked or fillings and
crowns are placed wrongly by the dentist.
Whatever the case the teeth do
not come together properly, and increased forces are placed on certain parts of
the teeth causing further damage.
Sometimes the gums and bone will adjust to excessive forces. But if the
excessive force is persistent bone destruction is a possibility.
Since the teeth and
supporting structures have the ability to adapt, a person may not even realize
that the gum recession is happening until there’s an increased sensitivity in
the teeth.
Fillings and crowns that do
not meet properly should be fixed by the dentist. This procedure should also stop grinding and clenching of the
teeth. Gums that have received will
cause the teeth to become really sensitive and the dentist may prescribe an
agent to desensitize the teeth. In most cases, a dentist will apply these solutions to a sensitive area.
Sometimes, if your gums are
damaged badly you may need a tissue regeneration procedure. In order to
regenerate gum tissue, your periodontist will do a soft tissue graft by taking
tissue from your palate and sewing it to the damaged site. This procedure is
done in order to help reduce further gum recession and covers exposed roots,
which protects them from decay and makes them less sensitive to hot or cold
foods and liquids. Also, the procedure may also be done for cosmetic reasons.
Gums that have receded make your teeth look too long. By bringing your gums
down where they belong, soft tissue grafts can correct the problem of a long tooth
smile.
