Tooth Whitening
Just picture this horrible
scenario: you’re getting ready for a major job interview, you just spent your
last $30 on a great haircut, and you’re dressed in your best clothes. About ready to leave and feeling great, you
take one last look in the mirror and smile at how professional you look. That’s when you spot it: one tooth with
noticeable yellow staining.
A discolored tooth can be deflating.
Although a darkened tooth does not necessarily mean anything negative
from a dental perspective, tooth discoloration has no positive effects on your
smile. As we all know, a great smile
can lift up anybody’s day. When we lose
confidence in the attractiveness in our smile, we become insecure about other
facets of our appearance. For this
reason, if you have a discolored tooth, it is highly recommended that you obtain
tooth whitening from a cosmetic dentist.
Tooth whitening is one of
the most popular procedures performed by cosmetic dentists and approximately
96% of past patients have claimed that tooth whitening has had a significant
effect. The reasons for tooth
discoloration are varied and include: tea consumption, antibiotics use, tobacco
use, coffee consumption, and aging. By
removing yellow or brown stains from your tooth, you will immediately gain more
confidence in your smile.
There are numerous tooth whitening options available for people like you. The number of tooth whitening products and
services can be staggering but there are three predominant options
available. The most effective and
safest way of obtaining tooth whitening is through in-office bleaching. In-office bleaching refers to tooth
whitening treatments that are performed by a dentist in their office. The tooth whitening technique that is
employed by the dentist will depend on what the patient wants. However, tooth whitening techniques employed
during in-office bleaching can be: abrasive teeth brightening, chemical
whitening, laser teeth whitening, and mild acid whitening.
Regardless of the tooth whitening
technique that is employed in an in-office bleaching, the entire tooth
whitening procedure will be completed quickly.
Also known as chairside bleaching or one-hour bleaching, in-office tooth
whitening involves the application of a bleaching agent on a patient’s
teeth. Once the dentist activates the
hydrogen peroxide contained in this bleaching agent through the use of either a
light or laser source, the patient’s tooth will undergo the whitening
process. In-office tooth whitening
products such as Zoom and Britesmile claim to lighten a user’s tooth by over 9
shades of whiteness.
Another option that is available for individuals seeking tooth whitening is
at-home bleaching or tooth whitening toothpastes. These tooth whitening options are easy to use and are convenient
in that it does not involve having to visit a dentist. Under the at-home bleaching option,
individuals are able to obtain tooth bleaching kits that contain carbamide
peroxide gel and a mouthguard. Although
the numerous at-home bleaching kits that are available makes it difficult to make
generalization about its use, usually the at-home tooth bleaching kit will work
because the carbamide peroxide will break down stain molecules. This allows oxygen to reach and whiten the
user’s tooth enamel. Additionally,
whitening toothpastes are available that contain polishing agents, which are
designed for removing deep teeth stains.
