How Zoom Teeth Whitening Is Performed

Zoom teeth whitening is a widely used procedure for whitening teeth. The teeth may change color due to smoking, consumption of colored liquids such as coffee, tea or red wine, or other external factors such as aging. Teeth can also get a darker color if they underwent an endodontic treatment, but under these circumstances, whitening is mostly done internally.

For stains and discolorations on the surface of the teeth, caused by external agents, external whitening procedures are recommended. Zoom teeth whitening is an external whitening procedure which is performed in-office after a dentist checkup to make sure that the teeth and gums are in good health.

Zoom Teeth Whitening Procedure

Zoom teeth whitening is a procedure performed in-office which involves the use of the Zoom Advanced Power Chairside Lamp. This device enhances the whitening process by activating the 25% hydrogen peroxide whitening agent. Hydrogen peroxide is broken down and the oxygen acts on the tooth, cleaning the dentin and enamel without causing any structural changes to the tooth.

The procedure might involve teeth cleaning prior to the whitening of the teeth. The preparation for the procedure consists of covering gums and lips so that only the teeth are exposed to the lamp. Next, the whitening teeth gel is applied on the teeth and left to act for about 15 minutes under the Zoom light. The gel is usually reapplied for two more 15 minute sessions, so the entire procedure lasts for about 45 minutes.

Some patients have problems with the procedure if they have a strong gag reflex. After the procedure, the dentist applies a gel or paste on the teeth to reduce sensitivity. This substance contains fluoride.

Aftercare and Whitening Maintenance

Your dentist will provide you a kit with custom whitening trays, which you should use at home following his instructions and recommendations. In order to maintain the whitening effect for longer, you are recommended to stop or reduce the consumption of some foods and beverages, especially those which are strongly colored and more likely to stain your teeth. It is also recommended to quit smoking.

You should have a proper oral hygiene, cleaning your teeth and tongue on a regular basis and using toothpaste recommended (typically with whitening properties). Regular visits to the dentist for professional cleaning are also good for maintaining your teeth bright for a longer period of time.

Cautions and Warnings Regarding Zoom Teeth Whitening

Similar to other teeth whitening procedures, Zoom whitening is not recommended to children under the age of 16 and should be avoided during pregnancy or lactation. In some patients, the procedure can cause teeth sensitivity, but this is also common to most whitening techniques. Some patients experience some minor tingling or feel discomfort due to the heat produced by the Zoom light.

Zoom teeth whitening might not have the exact same effect on all patients, so it is recommended that you discuss your whitening technique options with your dentist.
