What are dental caps?

Dental caps is a tooth-shaped device that completely covers the surface area of the tooth that is visible above the gum line. Dental caps are often used to protect teeth weakened by decay, build up teeth that are worn down, and in combination with other dental procedures like root canals or bridges. Dental caps may be made of all metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, all resin, or all ceramic materials.

Who is a candidate for dental caps?

Patients who are looking for cosmetic fixes for problems like chipped, stained, or misshapen teeth may be candidates for dental caps. Individuals may also need dental caps as part of a root canal or dental bridge.

How is the procedure performed?

Receiving a dental cap typically requires two visits to the dentist.  On the first visit your dentist will make an impression, or mold, of the area to be capped and send it to a medical manufacturer where the dental caps will be designed to perfectly fit your tooth. Your dentist will probably fit you with a temporary cap for you to wear in between appointments. Once the permanent cap is delivered to the dentist's office, you will have your second visit where the tooth will be prepared and the cap will be placed over your tooth, then secured with a special bonding agent.

What is the recovery like?

Dental caps usually involve little to no discomfort, but any discomfort which is felt is managed by over-the-counter painkillers.

Results

The new, higher-quality material used in modern dental caps makes cosmetic results more natural-looking than ever. No special care is needed for a capped tooth, but it's important to remember that the tooth underneath the cap is still at risk for decay, so good dental hygeine is important.
