Complications of Dental Implants
The dental implants procedure is considered a low risk surgery, but there may be some complications involved. If you are considering getting implants, you should find out about the possible complications.
Infection around the Implant
The area around the implant may get infected, due to the fact that there is a foreign body (the titanium screw) in the jaws. The infection is also known as implantitis and may also be due to the gathering of bacteria in the crown protecting the dental implant. The area should be monitored and if it becomes inflamed and red, you should consult your surgeon.
Implant Rejection
Even if titanium is a metal that is typically well tolerated by the human body, the implant may get rejected. This happens mostly in smoking patients, but may also be seen in older patients or patients that have a weak immune system.
Breaking of Implant
The implant is typically made of titanium, which is a resistant metal. However, it may happen that the root can break, especially if you eat hard foods such as peanuts, meats or ice cubes.
Bone Loss
Bone loss around the implant is possible. This is mostly due to periodontal disease, which can be prevented with a proper oral hygiene. Regular x-rays are needed to monitor the implant surrounding bone.
Incision Line Opening
During the implantation of the titanium screw, the gums will have to be cut so that the implant can be introduced. The incision line can open after the surgery, especially if you eat or sleep on the site that has been operated on.
