Invisalign - Teeth Straightening - Procedure

What is Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is a patented dental implant that is made from a plastic resin. These implants are custom made to each person and fit over their teeth. They help to achieve a straightening effect, to help realign teeth that are crooked or otherwise out of alignment.

What does Invisalign® do?

Invisalign® is shaped like a mouthguard or other device that is designed to protect the teeth. It helps to guide the teeth into a particular position. Over time, the teeth will gradually begin to reorganize and shift into a healthier, more cosmetically pleasing position.

What are the advantages of Invisalign® over other treatments?

The treatment that Invisalign® is most commonly compared with is orthodontic braces. Orthodontic braces help to achieve the same straightening alignment effect. However, there are a number of reasons why Invisalign® is preferable in many cases. There are cosmetic reasons; Invisalign® is made from a thin, clear plastic that will be much less noticeable than most braces are. There are issues of comfort. Most people find that Invisalign® is less likely to irritate the gums and lips than braces are. Invisalign® runs no risk of staining or damaging the surface of the teeth, as the cement that holds brackets into place for braces typically does. You can remove the Invisalign® guard when you eat and at other times, making it easier to clean and more manageable throughout your daily life.

Who is eligible for Invisalign®?

In almost all cases, doctors will recommend that patients only make use of the Invisalign® treatment when all of their adult teeth are fully grown in and are essentially done shifting. Because baby teeth will eventually fall out anyway, the Invisalign® process may not be beneficial in these situations.

What is the procedure like?

After consulting with your dental technician and confirming your interest in Invisalign®, you'll begin by having a series of images and models made. Most dentists will take X-rays and other images in order to better prepare the teeth for the Invisalign® implant. You'll also need to have a plaster model of your teeth made. This allows the dental technician to create the Invisalign® mouthguard so that it will specifically fit over your teeth. You'll return to the dentist's office after the guard is made in order to learn about how to wear and clean it properly.

What are the results?

When used properly, Invisalign® guards can help to straighten the teeth. This makes both cosmetic improvements and provides benefits for your dental health as well.

What are the risks?

There are few risks associated with Invisalign®. The plastic is designed to be neutral so that it will not cause any damage or negative reactions in the mouth. However, there may be some people who experience some sensitivity to the material itself. There exists a slight choking risk when you're wearing the plastic guard. This is why Invisalign® products are designed to be removed before eating and sleeping.
