Laser Dentistry
What is Laser Dentistry?
Laser dentistry consists of a variety of dental procedures. These procedures have in common the fact that they make use of special heated lasers to perform tasks that might otherwise be done by hand with other types of tools.
What does Laser Dentistry do?
There are a number of different goals that laser dentistry can help to accomplish. In terms of cosmetic benefits, lasers can be used to clean up the gum line and provide a better, straighter appearance for the teeth. They can also be used to clean up discolored spots on the teeth or to remove stains, thereby making the teeth whiter across the mouth. In terms of more serious health benefits, they can be used to help grind down the teeth to help make space for a cap, crown or filling. This is in contrast to the work of a drill, which has been more commonly used for these tasks until recent years.
What are the advantages of Laser Dentistry over similar procedures?
The primary advantage of laser dentistry is the accuracy with which it can be performed. Generally, lasers are much more accurate than other types of dentistry tools like drills. Therefore, they can target a highly specific area and avoid other areas which may be healthy and do not require assistance. Laser dentistry is also beneficial because these procedures tend to cause less pain than similar procedures. Finally, the heat from the laser is often beneficial for cauterizing any openings or incisions that are made, thereby saving in trouble for stitching and sutures.
Who is a candidate for Laser Dentistry?
Candidacy for laser dentistry is determined by the specific procedure that is done. In most cases, the procedure will only be performed on adult teeth that have fully grown into the mouth. Otherwise, the benefits of the procedure may be negated by the natural changes to the growth of the teeth. Most candidates for laser dentistry are adults, although those patients receiving fillings and caps may be children.
What does the procedure entail?
Laser dentistry typically involves an initial consultation with a dentist, followed by the procedure itself. The laser is used to treat the affected teeth. In many cases, anesthetic will not be necessary. In other cases, however, like those that affect the gum line, a local anesthetic will be applied to numb the affected area.
What are the results?
The results of a laser dentistry procedure are that the teeth will often have a smoother, lighter appearance. Damaged teeth or those that were cracked and which were repaired with fillings by laser dentistry will be strengthened and supported by the dental implants and therefore less likely to succumb to cavities and further decay.
What are the risks?
Because laser dentistry is a relatively new procedure, the potential long term risks are not entirely understood. However, the short term risks are minimal, and when performed correctly, there are few potential side effects.
