Porcelain Crown
What are Porcelain Crowns?
A porcelain crown is a dental implant that is designed to help strengthen and stabilize teeth that are otherwise damaged or decayed. If a tooth is cracked, split or suffering from a cavity, the integrity of the tooth is in jeopardy. A crown is a fitting that is attached over the tooth surface in order to provide additional stability. Porcelain crowns are made either entirely from porcelain or with a mixture of porcelain and a metal alloy.
What do Porcelain Crowns do?
By fitting into the cracks and other damaged areas of the affected tooth, porcelain crowns help to stabilize that tooth. They minimize the area in which the decay and damage can work and help to ensure that the tooth does not become further damaged over time.
What are the advantages of Porcelain Crowns over similar treatments?
While porcelain crowns cover the same types of benefits and serve the same functions as other types of crowns, there are a few important distinctions to make between them and other types of tooth caps. The primary advantage of porcelain crowns over gold or other types of crowns is that they are significantly more realistic looking. This helps to minimize the appearance of the crown and convey a lifelike appearance in the mouth.
What is the procedure for installing a Porcelain Crown?
Porcelain crowns must be specifically fabricated to the shape and size of the tooth to which they are going to be affixed. Therefore, the crowning process typically involves two distinct trips to the dentist's office. During the first trip, a molding of the affected area of the mouth is taken so that the manufacturer of the crown can create a model of the teeth on which to work. Once this is done, the manufacturer makes the crown according to the model. On the second visit, the crown is fit to the tooth and installed. This implanting process often requires anesthesia, because the original tooth must frequently be ground down to make room for the implant.
What is the recovery process like?
There may be some pain following the crown implant procedure. Generally, however, the recovery process is fairly mild. Your dentist will typically limit the foods and drinks that you may ingest for a set period of time. This provides a stable environment for the dental cement that holds the crown in place to fully set and adjust to your mouth.
What will the results be like?
Although you'll be able to feel the crown in your mouth, it will not be readily visible to the outside world. The benefit of the crown will be that your tooth will be strengthened.
What are the risks?
There are few risks associated with this procedure, when it is accomplished properly. However, porcelain crowns tend to not be as durable or as sturdy as other types of crowns, and may become damaged over time more easily than gold and other materials that are commonly used.
