What is Tooth Contouring?

Tooth contouring is a procedure that is used to adjust the natural contours and shape of a tooth that has been affected by decay or disease, or to adjust a tooth that is misaligned or out of proportion with the surrounding teeth. Tooth contouring is commonly used for both cosmetic and more serious health benefits.

How does Tooth Contouring work?

Tooth contouring is typically performed with a dental drill or, more recently, a laser. These tools are used to trim off excess tooth material to help shape the tooth to the desired appearance and size. By restructuring the length, positioning and size of the tooth, the tooth contouring process helps to improve both the appearance and the alignment of the tooth.

Who is a candidate for Tooth Contouring?

Tooth contouring is typically not performed on children. It is most often reserved for adults or older adolescents whose adult teeth have fully grown in. It's best if a patient's teeth are unlikely to continue to grow or to change position, as this may negate the effects and benefits of the tooth contouring process. Patients suffering from other infections and certain gum and mouth diseases may not be eligible for this procedure.

How is the Tooth Contouring procedure performed?

In many cases, the dental surgeon will create a computer simulation of the modified tooth structure in order to devise a plan of action along with the patient. Once the contour changes have been agreed upon, the surgeon will begin by making marks on the affected tooth in order to show the contour changes that are to take place.

A sand drill or laser is then used to remove small layers off of the surface of the tooth. The surgeon is careful to avoid contacting the pulp of the tooth and to protect the tooth from damage that may weaken it after the surgery. In many cases, Novocaine or another local anesthetic is used in order to prevent pain. Abrasive strips can be rubbed across the teeth after drilling in order to finalize the contour modifications.

What is the recovery like?

While there may be some heightened sensitivity in the affected area, the recovery process from this procedure is relatively simple. The dentist may advise against eating certain types of foods while the body adjusts to the changes. It's important to monitor the affected tooth for signs of infection. In some cases, a cap or crown may be helpful in restoring the appearance and functionality of the tooth.

What are the risks of Tooth Contouring?

The primary risk with tooth contouring is that the enamel that surrounds and protects the tooth may be damaged. If this occurs, the tooth may be more sensitive and may be exposed to the dangers of cavities and decay more readily than other teeth. Patients who grind their teeth often run the risk of negating the benefits through their actions following the surgery.
