Zoom!® Teeth Whitening

What is Zoom!® Teeth Whitening?

Zoom!® Teeth Whitening is a procedure that makes use of chemical gels that are activated by a special type of ultraviolet light. The procedure is done in a dentist's office and takes less than an hour to complete.

How does Zoom!® Teeth Whitening work?

This procedure uses a light-activated chemical gel that penetrates the outer layers of the teeth to remove stains and discoloration. The result is that the teeth are left whitened and of a more uniform color throughout the mouth.

What are the advantages of Zoom!® Teeth Whitening over other procedures?

Zoom!® Teeth Whitening is fast and easy. The entire process generally takes about 45 minutes to an hour to complete, making it a faster treatment than other types of whitening procedures like veneers. It also requires very little followup care and is generally painless, although patients may experience some discomfort while the lips and gums are covered to prevent contact with the gel. The average benefit of a Zoom!® Teeth Whitening procedure is an improvement in tooth color by about eight shades. This is more than double the average improvement in color for techniques like home whitening strips, whitening toothpaste and other common procedures.

Who is a candidate for Zoom!® Teeth Whitening?

In order to ensure an even, more permanent benefit, this procedure is most commonly performed only on adults whose teeth have grown in completely and are not likely to shift or adjust. While the procedure is theoretically safe for children, it can be more difficult to apply the gel safely and without the children accidentally swallowing it, so this is another reason why the most common patients for this treatment are adults.

How is Zoom!® Teeth Whitening performed?

Zoom!® Teeth Whitening is completed in a single visit to the dentist's office. The patient is first prepared for the whitening gel by having his lips and gums held up and away from the teeth and covered. This ensures that the gel cannot come into contact with this tissue. The gel is applied evenly over the teeth, and an ultraviolet light is shone on the gel to activate the chemical reaction. The process of gel application and light is repeated two additional times, then the gel is removed and the patient is sent home.

What is the recovery like?

Generally, there is not a period of recovery from this procedure. The results take place immediately. Still, your dentist may caution you to avoid certain types of foods and drinks which may be likely to stain the teeth and therefore negate the benefits of the procedure.

What are the risks?

There are few known risks to this procedure. The chemical reaction does not affect the enamel or other parts of the tooth. The risk of allergic reaction to the gel is minimal. However, because Zoom!® Teeth Whitening is a relatively new procedure, the long term effects of it are not entirely understood.
