Do dental fillings have to be replaced?
How long do fillings usually last?
Answers
Answered By: Oak Park Dental Associates
Dental fillings typically last around 7-10 years. Yes, they will need to be replaced once the seal around the filling material is broken and is then considered failing or compromised. Many fillings go untreated for many years beyond this time. The typical result of this neglect is severe damage and more dental work like crowns, root canal or, worse case scenario, loss of tooth and implant. Many of these costly work can be avoided with regular maintenance by replacing failing fillings.

There are many factors that affect the longevity of dental fillings (size, how and where they were placed) in addition to habitual factors (driving, eating, sleeping, oral hygiene habits) that can affect the longevity of dental fillings.
