After a large, deep filling, sometimes there is still discomfort to cold liquids or food. This, most the time, will gradually go away. If it hurts to hot liquids or food, or it throbs and hurts to biting down on foods, then most probably a root canal and a crown (cap) is necessary.

There are many factors that determine how a tooth responds after any dental treatment (depth of decay, method and materials used to restore it, etc). It's common to have lingering discomfort but if it does not subside or the pain increases, your tooth may not be healing properly and further action (root canal therapy or extraction) is likely.
