Left untreated a malocclusion not only affects the persons appearance it can also lead to TMJ (temporomandibular joint) problems and an increased risk of decay and gum disease.
For severe cases of malocclusion surgery may be necessary to correct and realign the jawbones. More often however malocclusion is corrected in the form of braces to correct misaligned teeth and crooked teeth. If crowding is also present teeth may be removed to make room to avoid further problems in the future.
