Tooth contouring is a dental procedure that is used to change the cosmetic appearance of the teeth or to correct minor problems with the surface of the enamel. By physically removing parts of the teeth, the look of the entire mouth can be modified while avoiding invasive or traumatic reconstructive procedures.
Tooth contouring involves using one or more dental tools to remove the surface enamel of the tooth. An abrasive sanding bit can be used to remove or smooth any irregularities. Lasers can also be used to eliminate thin layers of the tooth. If a problem exists between two teeth, then a strip of rough material can be run between them to help create a softer effect.
While tooth contouring can make a dramatic difference in the appearance of teeth, it cannot assist in repairing damage to the tooth that would require the use of crowns or onlays. Tooth contouring is able to be used on reconstructions that have already been affixed to teeth to help sculpt the shape of the mouth, however.
Patients who undergo tooth contouring experience little discomfort and are not required to observe a recovery period afterwards. The procedure is permanent because the enamel is removed, but the teeth may develop more damage in the future which may need to be repaired with other reconstructive treatments due to the loss of enamel.
