Dental Veneers - Procedure and Cost
What are Dental Veneers?
Dental veneers are implants that are designed to be fit over the surface of a damaged or decayed tooth. These implants may serve the cosmetic purpose of improving the appearance of the tooth, the general dentistry purpose of strengthening and supporting the damaged tooth, or some combination of the two.
How do Dental Veneers work?
Veneers may be made from either plastic polymer compounds or porcelain. In either case, the material may be indirectly fabricated and made to fit into the mouth of the patient. They are bonded to the surface of the affected tooth with a special type of dental cement that adheres them for an extended period of time.
What are the advantages of Dental Veneers over similar treatments?
Dental veneers are advantageous over similar treatments like caps and crowns for a number of reasons. Many patients find that dental veneers provide a more natural appearance and a smoother cosmetic benefit than caps and crowns, which may stick out. As a supportive implant, veneers are easier to make and install in the mouth than these other treatment options. Although they are not as sturdy and tend to not last as long, veneers can be implanted in a shorter period of time and with a much less painful procedure.
Who is a candidate for Dental Veneers?
Veneers are almost exclusively used to treat adult teeth that have fully grown into the mouth and which are not likely to move or adjust in the future. Because the veneers are fixed dental implants, they have the potential to cause pain or alignment problems for the teeth if the teeth surrounding the veneers begin to move or adjust. Therefore, most veneer patients are adults. Because dental veneers are often used to correct cosmetic issues like staining and discoloration, adults are more likely to suffer from these conditions.
How are Dental Veneers installed?
Veneers are created by means of a special molding that is made of the mouth. This molding is made from dental plaster and is subsequently used to create a model of the affected tooth or teeth, and then veneers will be placed on top of those teeth. The veneers are then checked for proper fit in the patient's mouth before being implanted and bonded into place with dental cement.
What will the results be like?
After a dental veneer is implanted, the patient will have a cleaner, smoother, brighter smile and an improved tooth appearance. In some cases, the veneer will require that the patient avoid certain types of foods. Most dentists recommend avoiding coffee, tea and any other items which tend to stain teeth after having veneers installed, as these foods can negate the benefits.
What are the risks?
There are few risks associated with dental veneers, when properly installed. It is difficult to clean the teeth underneath the veneers, and infection or other disease may occur if not treated properly before installation.
