What is a Smile Makeover?

A smile makeover refers to a combination of different surgical techniques that are designed to serve the cosmetic purpose of improving the appearance of your teeth and smile. Depending upon the specific patient and the appearance of the teeth before the procedure, the treatment may involve lasers or drills to grind down excess tooth matter, caps, crowns and veneers to cover chipped or misshapen teeth, tooth straightening devices like braces and tooth whitening techniques.

What does a Smile Makeover do?

The goal of a smile makeover is purely cosmetic and is to improve the appearance of the patient's teeth. This is to be distinguished from a mouth reconstruction procedure, which is not voluntary and is necessary in cases of trauma or physiological irregularities in order to repair the teeth to facilitate proper eating, drinking and speaking.

What are the advantages of a Smile Makeover over similar techniques?

A smile makeover is a combination of a range of different cosmetic dental techniques. This means that it is generally more comprehensive than any of those techniques is individually. On the other hand, a full smile makeover will almost always be more expensive than a single cosmetic treatment procedure for the teeth will be.

Who is a candidate for a Smile Makeover?

The smile makeover procedure is available to most patients. However, due to the cosmetic nature of this procedure, it's generally advised that a patient wait until his adult teeth have fully grown into his mouth and have stopped shifting position. Otherwise, the benefits of the procedure can be quickly negated. Some of the techniques that may be included in a full smile makeover are not appropriate for children, so dentists may place certain restrictions in these cases.

What does a Smile Makeover procedure involve?

The beginning of the smile makeover is a consultation with a dental technician to determine the goals of the procedure. In some cases, a computer generated image of the projected benefits is created. If a set of braces, a retainer or another dental implant is necessary, the dentist will likely need to take a molding of the mouth in order to create those implants prior to installing them. Laser and drill procedures are typically done with a general or local anesthetic, and whitening gels can be applied in a single session and without any anesthetic. Most smile makeovers take multiple sessions and visits to the dentist's office.

What are the results?

The results of a smile makeover will be an improvement in the cosmetic appearance of the teeth and gums. This includes straightening and evening out of the teeth, whitening the surface of the teeth, and filling in spaces or damaged areas.

What are the risks?

As with other procedures, there are some risks of secondary infection and disease. There is also often pain associated with this procedure. By taking proper care of the implants and the teeth that have been affected, however, patients can greatly reduce these risks.
