Cosmetic Dental Bonding - Teeth Bonding Cost and Information

What is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a primarily cosmetic procedure that involves the application of a durable hard plastic resin to the surface of one or more teeth. The resin is then bonded to the tooth when a special light is shone upon it.

How does Dental Bonding work?

If you suffer from a decayed tooth or a chipped or cracked tooth that affects your appearance, dental bonding may work for you. The plastic resin is designed to match the color of your other teeth. Therefore, when the bond is adhered to the tooth via the special light procedure, it is nearly impossible to tell where the real tooth ends and the bonding agent begins.

Who is a candidate for Dental Bonding?

There are a wide number of conditions or cosmetic issues that may benefit from a dental bonding procedure. While this procedure is typically not a necessary medical expense, it can nonetheless help to improve your cosmetic appearance.

Patients suffering from decayed or cracked teeth are most commonly in search of dental bonding procedures. This method will also work to help elongate teeth that are short or that have been ground down over time. It can help to close gaps between teeth and can, in some cases, also be used to remedy teeth that aren't straight or which are drastically different in size from one another.

How is the Dental Bonding procedure performed?

Dental bonding is a straightforward dental procedure and typically does not require preparation or anesthesia. The situations in which it will require anesthesia are those in which the bonding is used to cover a decayed tooth that may have exposed nerves beneath it.

During the procedure, the surface of the tooth is roughened with a preparative chemical. This helps to ensure that the resin will bond to the tooth evenly and cleanly. The resin is then applied directly to the surface of the tooth. The dentist will shape and mold the resin to ensure that it is the correct size and that it covers the damaged area of the tooth properly. When you are satisfied with the appearance, the dentist will then shine an ultraviolet light on the resin to harden it.

What is the recovery like?

The recovery process for dental bonding is very simple and much easier than many other types of dental procedures. Generally, you'll be required to limit the foods that you eat for a few days in order to ensure the bonding is secure. You'll also need to avoid especially hot and cold drinks during this time. There is very little need for any post operative care other than these particular requirements.

What are the risks of Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding resins tend to be somewhat more likely than crowns to stain over time. The materials used to bond to the teeth are also not as strong as those found in crowns, so they may require touch-up work after a few years.
